HERE COMES TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Anyone who was into the big screen 34 years ago remembers the iconic film starring Tom Cruise  in ‘Top Gun.’ This fast-paced action-packed flick took hold of audience mind’s and hearts and tossed them deep into the story of an overachieving, arrogant hotshot pilot.

There is so much about this film that continues to rattle around in our brains even-decades later. Who doesn’t get a thrill hearing the ‘Top Gun Anthem?’ And what  classic movie tunes pull at your heartstrings stronger than ‘Take My Breath Away?’

If you’ve visited or lived in San Diego, watching fighter jets take off at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (formerly Naval Air Station Miramar) is still a thrill and brings back ‘Top Gun’ memories.

Don’t forget the ‘Kansas City Barbeque’ known to the locals as the ‘Top Gun Bar.’ The rustic bar (located in downtown San Diego) brings to mind the songs featured in this movie such as ‘Great Balls of Fire’ and ‘You’ve Lost the Lovin’ Feelin.’’ Do you remember that line, “Goose, you big stuuuuuud! Take me to bed or lose me forever!”? Yeah!

I have to admit that looking back at my novel, ‘First Spouse Of The United States,’ parts of which take place during the same time period, there are some striking similarities between Maverick in Top Gun and air combat ace, Rocky in FSOTUS. Weird how the subconscious takes over!

Let’s get back on track: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (Top Gun 2)

Top Gun 2’s release date was changed from this June to 23 December 2020. That sounds like a long time from now. Don’t think about it. All the movie theaters are closed, anyway. Think about Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer acting alongside one another again! God, the tension between these two was great the first time around. I can’t wait to see what happens this time around.

Top Gun 2 was filmed in San Diego at North Island on Coronado and at the Marine Corps Fighter Weapons School at Miramar.

Miles Teller plays ‘Goose’s’ son in this flick. That should be interesting.

We have just what the ‘doctor ordered’ during the Covid-19 incarceration. What we all need is something to look forward to. Other than being released from ‘Stay-At-Home’ –  nothing like a sequel to one of our favorite all-time movies to take our minds off the Coronavirus.

Top Gun cost $15 million. It grossed $356 million. Top Gun 2 production costs exceeded $152 million. What do you think #2 will gross?

Jennifer Connelly plays Maverick’s love interest. Lucky Tom!

The jet sequences are stunning and suck you right in. Don’t be surprised if you get a bit nauseous watching the trailers….
